Needs Analysis

Needs Analysis

Research shows that many elementary and secondary school teachers currently teaching Computer Science (CS) have not received formal CS training during their college education. In Indiana, teacher preparation programs often rely on pre-existing curricula, such as Code.org and Project Lead the Way, but these resources have limitations in adapting CS education to diverse classroom contexts. This highlights a critical need to better understand what preservice teachers are being taught about CS education and identify potential solutions to the challenges they face.

In the first year of our initiative, we conducted a needs analysis of Education Preparation Programs (details available in the following sections). This analysis has been expanded to include in-service teachers, starting in Fall 2024. The results of this second needs analysis will guide us in providing more effective support for teachers through professional development, resources, and licensure or micro-credentialing programs.
